The stadiums in FIFA 16 are a thing of beauty

The way I see it, there are two possible explanations. One: the developers at EA Canada have found the simplest way to make customers feel like their annual purchase is more than just a roster update. Alternatively: a perfectly balanced football game simply doesn't exist, and with each corrective redesign EA is orbiting in vain around a non-existent ideal. Let's take the sympathetic view for now. While many of these changes seem to contradict gameplay aspects which were fundamental to FIFA 15, they aren't, in and of themselves, negative. Indeed, one of my favourite things about playing FIFA 16 has been how challenging I've found it, particularly for the first few hours.

The same can be said for some of the dribble moves. The herky-jerky movements seem to be handled better with far smoother transitions. The stadiums are a thing of beauty. Their visual appeal is augmented by a variety of different lighting effects dictated by the time of the match and weather conditions. Some of those qualities have been slightly improved from years past, but there are also brand-new features. Finally. The two northernmost countries in CONCACAF have world-class squads in a FIFA game. The inclusion of women’s national teams in FIFA 16 ranks so highly on the back-of-the-box-new-features bullet points that it’s actually on the cover.

This is a substantial addition that goes beyond swapping player models or skins. Female players were brought in for a completely new set of motion capture making it feel noticeably unique and positively different from the men’s game. It’s an impressive no-shortcuts approach that gives American and Canadian soccer fans a close-to-home reason to pick up this year’s entry. It’s worth noting, though, that if you do well with your FUT Draft team, you’ll earn some pretty decent rewards. So, you do get some return for the cost of entry - along with the fun of roleplaying as a wealthy, wildly irresponsible owner. The yield of the brand new thing labeling system making sorting out those troublesomely, but in addition the Transport Marketplace on internet and mobile devices big packs productive and simple..

The key to unlocking defences and keeping possession is to mix up your passing game to pull teams out of shape. Manage to get through and the shooting is exceptional, given real fizz and physicality. Smacking one into the back of the net has rarely been so gratifying. But, it's just one more way of playing in a game that includes masses of ways already. Online isn't generally fun for the reasons that we've mentioned, but if you like challenging and engaging gameplay, offline is the way to go. Folks who play one match before ruling the game out or who play on the amateur difficulty setting and enjoy winning every game 15-0 won't really notice much of a difference to last year's effort but for those of us who want to face off against a tough AI-controlled opponent and take on a real challenge, the devil is in the detail. Any time repeatable pain is taken out of the match, it is something to be observed, although it is certainly not a show stopper

This has the advantage of stretching play quicker, or catching defenders unaware. The drawback is that it's much easier to mis-control, the ball bobbling off unprepared feet. Despite being a good idea, there's one niggling problem on the back of Draft that doesn't sit too well with us. In order to unlock the new mode, you'll need to save up and spend 15,000 FIFA 16 coins, which means that you'll need to grind a bit of Ultimate Team regardless. And if you don't want to? Well, you'll have to cough up real money so that you can buy 300 FIFA points and nab a Draft token. Given that Ultimate Team is so rife with real world money issues to begin with, this seems like the easy way out for EA, in which it's essentially telling people that they can get to the good stuff - the Messis, the Ronaldos, the Neymars - right now, as long as they're prepared to pay a little extra for it.

The point of any team’s inclusion, other than authenticity, is that fans of that specific side will be delighted to get to play as them. Followers of the women’s international teams will now be able to play (parts of) FIFA 16 as their nation of choice, and they feel like a natural inclusion after the general success of the recent World Cup. Gone are the days of being able to mash A with both passer and pass-ee facing the wrong way and still connect a pass. Even with some passing assists on, FIFA 16 expects you to take into account whether the person passing the ball can actually see his intended target. If not, it’ll probably go off course. Likewise, if the person you want to receive the pass is busy gazing into the stands and fantasizing about his agent, it may not be collected cleanly; or just nabbed by an eager opposition player.
