With EA Sports’ latest installment of the FIFA franchise just around the corner, there are many questions to be answered. Will there finally be changes made to career mode? Will price ranges be scrapped? Who will be the most overpowered team to use online? In terms of in-game stats, there are a selection of attributes players are inevitably drawn to when a new FIFA comes out. Players can make a name for themselves by simply having ridiculous strength, pace or long shots - just ask Adebayo Akinfenwa, Mathis Bolly or Geovanni for the more old school Ultimate Team players.
Women don’t see most of the other modes, though - you’re not going to be taking part in FIFA 16’s mildly revamped career mode with the women, for example. With the men you can go through this section, of course, and you too can be disappointed that training - where you choose up to five players each week to drill in certain ways, allowing stats to be increased and younger players to develop quicker - all feels thoroughly gimmicky and like a wad more padding in a mode that doesn’t need to waste more of your time. Everything else in career mode - the continuing focus on scouting, the improved array of tournaments and grounds on show and so on - is a good distraction and a fine way to sink single-player time into the game, but it does feel like it doesn’t get the love certain other modes, featured in a boxout on these pages, do.

"FIFA 16" gives you the tools to stop your opponent with confidence. Move with greater freedom as a defender - rely on your team to defend as a unit, and your back line to track menacing runs to create balance between attacking and defending. The defensive options in FIFA 16 have been changed a lot, too. There are more ways than ever to defend the goal based on the situation you're in, but it requires a lot more concentration and judgement than defending in previous installments. Using the same tactic over and over again never works, which means you've got to learn all of the controls in order to defend effectively. Still, expect your AI buddies to bail you out of bad situations - it's the best FIFA AI in a while, yet it allows you to sit back and relax a little at times when you really shouldn't be able to, making attacking a lot more frustrating for the other team. Whereas in FIFA 15 most matches were played on the wing, FIFA 16 matches are scrappy, dirty and always played in midfield.

Before I played FIFA 16 I was actually really worried about this year, because for me FIFA as a series was at a future defining crossroads. Would EA continue down the fast paced, arcade track, or would they finally go back and do the fundamental football work which has been sorely missed for a number of years now. I'm pleased to say that they've clearly done the latter, and as a fan of FIFA as a simulation, I couldn't be happier with the teams vision for this game, the execution of it, and how the new gameplay changes combine with features both new and old to create a FIFA which as as close to balanced, as I've ever played.
