Career mode is one of the most enjoyable aspects of FIFA

Since its debut in 1993 (innocuously titled FIFA International Soccer), the FIFA video game series has become an institution; its appearance on end-of-year best seller lists as reliable as death and taxes. “Women are playing a big part in football right now,” says Channon. “The growth in the support, the popularity of the sport, the quality of the football. [The World Cup] was a phenomenal tournament. The entertainment value in the games was outstanding. And that needs to be part of our game.” But not right away. FIFA’s engine circa 2011-2012 could build men’s bodies, but women were an unknown quantity. To see what a female character might look like running on the then-current technology, a prototype was pulled together where a woman’s head was modelled on top of a man’s body. Predictably, it didn’t look “quite right.”

Finally, for the cash-rich time-rich (family poor) FIFA fan, there is the FIFA 16 Super Deluxe Edition. Of course you get the full game, but you can also count on 40 FIFA Ultimate Team Jumbo Premium Gold Packs (these delivered one a week for 40 consecutive weeks). For the Ultimate Tean fan there are five-match FUT Loan Player items of Lionel Messi, Sergio Agüero, and Thibaut Courtois. And you get the two celebrations. So if you are a mad FUT fan, money is no object, and you want to kick off the season with three of the world's best, you know what to do. This option costs £79 via the PlayStation Store. Career Mode honors its ardent fanbase by adding two features they’ve requested for the longest - pre-season tournaments and player training. Your team now has an even easier time developing into the championship caliber squad you want it to be. Your players can dabble in pre-season games to get their team synergy tighter and keep your custom player busy.

The option to play or simulate the training of different skills for any player on your team helps gradually increase their play on the field and keeps everyone on a level playing field skills-wise. David Rutter, head of the FIFA series, tells The Guardian that the feature has been in the works for some time, but that the developer waited until it could be done properly. "We needed to have tools and technology in place that could differentiate between men and women," he explained. "Plus, we had to factor in the time and effort required for traveling around the world to scan faces and heads, record motion capture, etc. It's been on the to-do list for a while." The game will include the scanned likeness of some of the bigger names in women’s soccer, including Canadian Christine Sinclair and England captain Stephanie Houghton, and Rutter says that a new animation system was built to accommodate the new players. "It's a pretty big change," he said.

And that’s not all. One of the most common mistakes is not catching the ball from corner (or even simple cross can be sometimes enough). They just go for the ball, they raise their hand (in the air) and just watch opponent running towards the ball, jumping and heading it into your goal. And trust me, at this moment you’re nothing but annoyed. Still not the worst. It doesn’t happen that often as the mistake I’ve mentioned above but it still happens. Imagine direct shot from FK which was blocked by your wall - great. It wasn’t really blocked, because the ball went up and it’s aiming at your goal. But your goalkeeper is here so no problem, right? Wrong. He does step forward totally looking everywhere but ball and you have just conceded really silly goal.

Career mode is one of the most enjoyable aspects of FIFA, but it hasn’t changed much in the last few versions. While 16’s enhancements are far from revolutionary, training your players during each week is a great development. Plus, it’s a clever way to incorporate the drill-based minigames that keep us at the loading screens a little longer than usual. One of the first things you’ll notice when playing 16 is the new FIFA Trainer feature. With the click of a stick, you can now toggle a simple overlay next to your player, which gives contextual gameplay tips. These include simple maneuvers like shooting, tackling, and performing clearances. The Trainer is supposed to automatically level up based on your performance, dishing out more complex tricks if you prove your ability.

Women's football has a reason to cheer with EA Sports announcing that the upcoming version of its popular game Fifa 16 will feature 12 international women's teams. The move comes 22 years after the first 'Fifa International Soccer' game was released in 1993. Although female video game characters are not new - Lara Croft being the first to come to mind, this is the first time that participants get to choose to be female football players. This can be a refreshing option for women, considering that they constitute approximately 48% of all gamers, a study revealed in 2014.
